In conversation with Irene Caselli and Nabeelah Shabbir

The Correspondent is an ad-free, member-funded journalism platform that wants to “unbreak news”. How do they cover the world’s events without following the breaking news cycle? We will talk to two of their correspondents — Irene Caselli and Nabeelah Shabbir — to find out how to reinvent the traditional newsroom.

Here is all you need to know about the online discussion The Correspondent: One Year of Unbreaking the News:

When: Wednesday, December 9, 2020, 17:30-19:00 Sofia time.

Where: It’s all taking place on Zoom.

Working language: English.

Attendance is free but you need to register here: https://bit.ly/3fTFePa You will receive the Zoom link one day before the event.

Irene Caselli, First 1,000 Days correspondent, will talk about the different approach that The Correspondent takes compared to traditional media that she worked for before. She will explain the Correspondent-centred approach, as well as the idea of uncovering systemic structures by allowing journalists the possibility to follow their passions through beats. She will talk about having a weekly newsletter as an open notebook for readers and how she incorporates members’ suggestions and feedback in her daily work.

Nabeelah Shabbir, conversation editor, will try to answer some of the following questions: What happens when journalism becomes a two-way street with member involvement; whether journalism and reporting can be framed within the idea of “a learning curve”, rather than being preached from a pedestal of respect, information and authority; and how do you all do this on a transnational scale? The Correspondent sees much potential for the way writers are reaching readers today. As conversation editor of The Correspondent, Shabbir will share what her day to day looks like when working with writers and members on stories.
