The Association of European Journalists-Bulgaria in partnership with the Bulgarian-American Commission for Educational Exchange (Bulgarian Fulbright Commission) are organizing a workshop on data journalism. Miranda S. Spivak, an American veteran and award-winning journalist and Fulbright scholar, will be conducting the training for reporters and editors. The event, which will last a total of two hours, will take place on February 15th.
“Translating Data Into Stories” is a workshop that will offer tips for looking through data to find information that can help inform journalists’ work. By looking at datasets about health, education, the environment, government contracts and spending and other topics, journalists can bring to life dry documents and data to help inform readers and make governments and businesses accountable to the public.
The event is free of charge. Working language: English (no Bulgarian translation is available). If you wish to participate, please register using this online form. The workshop starts at 10.00am on the 15th of February (Friday) and it will take place at Fulbright’s office at Vitosha Blvd.,12, Sofia.
The participants would need to bring two datasets – whose headers can be translated into English – on any topics that interest you to share with the group. We will analyze them by looking for patterns, missing information and figuring out ways to fact-check the data and your conclusions about the data.
Miranda Spivak is an independent journalist an advising editor at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, USAToday, Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting and Columbia Journalism Review.
